When Onward Scholars at St. Pius-Matthias were asked what matters most to them, family was are curring theme. In some cases, students talk about being inspired by a twin sister, a baby brother, a grand parent; in other essays, they talk about the family values that shape their decisions. Here’s what Ashley Salcedo and Celeste Contreras, both class of 2015, have to say about their families.
Celeste Contreras
Family has to be the most meaningful aspect of my life. I know that we’ve had our ups and downs throughout my life time, but they’re always there for me. I feel that I've been blessed to have such an amazing family. My family is the reason why I am getting an excellent education and the reason why I strive to do my best.Without my family and their continuous support I would be completely lost. I know that my family is not perfect, but they do the best they can, and I greatly appreciate them.

While other girls would say that their most precious thing is their phones or their clothes, I am proud to say that my mother is the best thing I have. Not only my mother but all my family is significant to me. I have learned a lot from my mother, she is a single mother but she is very hard working. She has taught me to never give up and to work for what I dream. My family has been through good and bad but has always maintained strong and together, traits I wish to learn and maintain.
